Race review by Angela Ackerley.
Didn't feel as though I'd trained enough for this but it went far better than I expected. Exact same finish time as IM Austria, to the minute!!!
First half of the swim seemed to fly by, was pretty cool at around 15 degrees and appeared to be a few hundred metres long. The bike course is flat & fast with plenty of room for a fair race so it was disappointing to see large packs riding together, suppose if they can live with being cheats that's up to them.
At around 83 miles my spares bottle came loose and was hanging on by one screw bashing against my seat post. Luckily it stayed put till the end. Around the same time the heavens opened for a while so we all got a good soaking. Riding back into the city we had a tremendous thunder storm and it was like riding through a river...not ideal when negotiating tram lines but I stayed upright into T2, thank god.
First lap or so of the run went great then half way into the marathon I felt as though I was running on empty, just couldn't get the amount of gels down that I needed but just kept putting one foot in front of the other. There's no feeling like making it to the finish line after over 12 hours of constant effort. So pleased with my time and place in my age group.
Fab race, great organisation and support in a beautiful city.....loved it.
